Kaungmudaw pagoda
is one of the most well known pagodas in Myanmar for its dome shaped
designed. It is totally different from our traditional-style, pyramidal
structures of Burmese Pagodas. It is one of the tourist attraction sites
in the Sagaing Area.
In AD 1636,
it was built by King Thalun and his son. The pagoda is 46 meters (151
ft) high and has circumference of 274 meters. At the base of the pagoda,
there are 812 stone pillars and each one with a hollow and an image of
120 nats in it.
The stupa enshrined the Buddhist relics inside its relic chamber.
Kaungmudaw pagoda is also known as Yazaamanisula Pagoda. The pagoda dome has been continuously painted white to signify purity but now it was glided with gold.
According
to local saying, the king agonized interminably over how to shape the
stupa. Hia Queen tired of hubby’s indecisiveness, ripped open her blouse
and pointing to her breast, said “Make it like this!” But it was
actually modeled after the Rumanwelisuya Pagoda of Sri Lanka.
